Kamloops court held up after youth collapses during sentencing

KAMLOOPS - A court hearing for a Kamloops youth ended with a 9-1-1 call today, Jan. 14, after she passed out as a judge handed her a jail sentence.

The youth, who was already in custody and cannot be named due to a publication ban, was being sentenced for uttering threats and breaching probation.

The proceedings had almost wrapped up in Kamloops Provincial Court when the 19-year-old leaned forward in the prisoner’s dock and fell to the ground, hitting her head on the glass. A sheriff quickly responded, noted she was conscious, and paged other sheriffs to the courtroom.

Judge Len Marchand asked everyone sitting in the gallery to leave.

The girl’s mother, who was present in the courtroom, said her daughter experiences mild seizures when exposed to stress. Around 11:30 a.m., an ambulance was dispatched to the courthouse.
