ROADS AND HIGHWAYS SLIPPERY

KELOWNA – The sunny and cold weather of the last couple of weeks is gone as the temperature rises and the snow begins.

By Wednesday, temperatures will be well above seasonal normal with the snow turning to rain.

A moist Pacific frontal system is hitting the cold air over the region producing snow. It’s the same system that prompted a Special Weather Statement from Environment Canada warning of heavy snow in the highway mountain passes.

The meteorologists are calling for anywhere between 5 cm to 15 cm of snow Monday depending where you are.

The forecast for Kamloops calls for 4 cm of snow Monday before it changes to rain showers Tuesday with a high of 0 C. By Wednesday, the high will hit 7 C with periods of rain.

Salmon Arm and the Shuswap are getting the most snow Monday with up to 15 cm predicted.

Vernon could see up to 10 cm of the white stuff Monday. The snow will stop around midnight. Expect some flurries late in the afternoon and evening on Tuesday with a high of 1 C. The forecast calls for periods of rain on Wednesday with a high of 8 C.

Kelowna could get up to 10 cm of snow Monday with flurries and a high of 2 C Tuesday. On Wednesday, the mercury rises to 8 C with the snow turning to rain.

Penticton is expecting about 6 cm of snow Monday. Clouds and showers are in the forcast for Tuesday with periods of rain and a high of 8 C on Wednesday.

Needless to say road and highway conditions are a little treacherous.

Several drivers failed to negotiate the snow covered roads safely in the Okanagan and Thompson on Monday.

There was a rollover on Highway 97 south of Peachland, a crash between 2 cars on the new section of Highway 97 in Lake Country, a vehicle hit a retaining wall on Highway 97 near Crystal Waters Road between Oymana and Vernon and there was a 2-car smash-up on 32nd Street in Vernon. No serious injuries have been reported in any of the car crashes.

According to Drive B.C., Highway 97 from Summerland through Kelowna to Vernon has compact snow and slippery sections. Highways 97 and 97-A from Vernon to the TransCanada have slippery sections throughout. There are white out conditions when passing on the compact snow in the passing lanes.

The TransCanada in the Kamloops area is in pretty good shape with slippery sections reported.

Crews are out plowing and sanding.
