B.C WOMAN TRIED TO SPONSOR SYRIAN FAMILY MEMBERS WHO DROWNED OFF TURKEY
A Vancouver-area woman had been trying to sponsor three Syrian relatives — including her two young nephews — and their mother, who drowned off the Turkish coast.They were among at least 12 migrants, including five children, who drowned Wednesday when two boats carrying them to the Greek island of Kos capsized.

PORTUGUESE MAN FINED FOR HARASSING SWIMMING DEER
A Portuguese man has been fined $1 by a British Columbia court and ordered to donate $5,000 to a wildlife trust for hitting a swimming deer on the head off the province's northwest coast.Rodolfo Lopes, previously misidentified in court documents as Martins-Lopes, pleaded guilty in Terrace provincial court on Wednesday to one count of harassing wildlife with a motor vehicle.

VOTERS HEAD TO POLLS IN CALGARY-FOOTHILLS
Voters in northwest Calgary go to the polls Thursday in a provincial byelection that appears to have become bigger than the sum of its votes.Polls and political observers suggest Calgary-Foothills is a three-way race among the governing NDP, the Opposition Wildrose and the Progressive Conservatives, who have held the seat since 1971, but gave it up when former premier Jim Prentice quit politics on election night last spring when the New Democrats swept the PCs from power.

ONTARIO PC LEADER HOPES TO WIN SEAT IN BYELECTION
Voters in the central Ontario riding of Simcoe North head to the polls today in a byelection Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown has to win in order to have a seat in the legislature when it resumes this month. Brown won the party leadership in May after resigning his federal seat as the Conservative MP for Barrie.
