Household hazardous waste round up returns

The 2013 Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) Household Hazardous Waste Round Up will take place on Saturday, September 28th from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Okanagan College parking lot in Vernon and from 9:00 am to noon at the Enderby Fire Hall and the Lumby Fire Hall. Bring your household hazardous waste for safe disposal or recycling: old pesticides, solvents, chemicals, or corrosive and toxic cleaners; almost anything with a flammable or poisonous label. This service is provided free of charge to RDNO residents.

The Round Up is for household hazardous waste only. Containers up to 20 litres in size will be accepted. Waste from commercial or industrial sources will not be accepted, nor will electronic waste.

Residents should take the following precautions when loading and transporting hazardous materials:

1. Keep away from children, pets or food products;
2. Tightly secure lids to prevent leaks;
3. Leave the material in the original container and do not remove the labels. This will ensure proper handling if contents are unknown; and
4. Pack in a sturdy box and place upright to prevent spills and line your trunk or truck bed with plastic just in case.

For residents unable to attend the September 28th Round Up, there are many year round drop off locations for various types of hazardous waste. Chasers Bottle Depot at 4702 31st Street, Vernon, accepts some pesticides, solvents and flammable liquids from residents at no charge. Chasers Bottle Depot also accepts unwanted paint, as does Interior Freight and Bottle Depot in Vernon, Armstrong Collision Services in Armstrong and KBM Autoworks and Towing in Lumby. These events would not be possible without the dedicated volunteers from the Enderby and Vernon Lion Clubs, and firefighters from the Enderby and Lumby Fire Departments. For more information about the event or other hazardous waste disposal options, please contact the RDNO at 250-550-3700.
