WHL Roundup: Steenbergen scores winner, Broncos knock off league-leading Cougars

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - Tyler Steenbergen's second goal of the game came 59 seconds into overtime as the Swift Current Broncos rallied past the Prince George Cougars 5-4 on Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

Lane Pedersen and Calvin Spencer scored in the third period for the Broncos (8-2-1), who trailed 4-2 with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Glenn Gawdin scored in the second while Steenbergen's first came in the opening period.

Shane Collins, Tate Olson, Jesse Gabrielle and Justin Almeida supplied the offence for the league-leading Cougars (10-2-1).

Taz Burman made 30 saves for the win as Ty Edmonds stopped 28-of-33 shots in defeat.

Swift Current was a perfect 2 for 2 on the power play while Prince George scored twice on four chances with the man advantage.

AMERICANS 4 WINTERHAWKS 3

PORTLAND, Ore. — Michael Rasmussen scored near the midway point of the third period as Tri-City had three unanswered goals to top the Winterhawks.

Juuso Valimaki and Vladislav Lukin also scored as the Americans (6-4-0) reeled off their three straight goals to erase a two-goal deficit. Keltie Jeri-Leon found the back of the net in the first.

Keegan Iverson struck twice for Portland (8-4-0) and Brendan De Jong had the other.

PATS 6 HURRICANES 1

REGINA — Filip Ahl scored twice — including the eventual winner — and added an assist to lead the Pats past Lethbridge.

Sam Steel also struck twice for Regina (7-0-3), while Rykr Cole and Nick Henry chipped in as well.

Giorgio Estephan replied for the Hurricanes (5-4-2), who are on a three-game slide.

CHIEFS 2 SILVERTIPS 1

SPOKANE, Wash. — Kailer Yamamoto scored early in the first period, then set up the eventual winner as the Chiefs edged Everett.

Jaret Anderson-Dolan scored the eventual winner late in the first for Spokane (3-4-2).

Patrick Bajkov made it one-goal game for the Silvertips (8-2-1) in the second period.

ROYALS 9 BLADES 3

VICTORIA — Ryan Beckford had a goal and five assists and Regan Nagy had a pair of goals as the Royals hammered Saskatoon.

Kaid Oliver, Scott Walford, Dante Hannoun, Chaz Reddekopp, Blake Bargar and Jack Walker rounded out the Victoria (6-5-0) offence.

Chase Wouters, Braylon Shmyr and Kolten Olynek scored for the Blades (5-3-1).
