Highway message board in Okanagan just can't get it right

The highway sign on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017.

VERNON - An automated sign on Highway 97 south of Vernon is going off script with messages that are at best cryptic, and at worst, indecipherable or even just sad.

The sign, which was installed in 2014 just south of the Okanagan College Vernon campus, has been on the fritz for weeks.

On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the board featured the words “ALONE ALONE” followed by a gobbledegook of letters.

Of course, we all know what the sign is trying to say — Leave the phone alone. Which is good advice, even if it is a little distracting trying to decipher the message.

Motorists have also reported head-scratchers such as “Expect ferry waits.”

The amusing messages may be around a little longer.

According to a written statement from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the province is aware of the problem and has an electrical contractor working on it.

“The exact timeline for repair is not yet known as the sign requires a replacement part that has been ordered from the supplier. The repair will be completed as soon as the part is available,” the ministry says.

— This story was updated at 9:42 a.m. Sept. 7, 2017 to say the sign has been having issues for weeks.
