Highlights of Kelowna City Council meeting: March 24

Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art
Council received the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art Annual Report. Highlights included plans for 2014, diverse programming, providing links to the City of Kelowna’s Cultural Plan, and nourishing community partnerships.

2014 Carryovers
Council received Volume 2 of the 2014 Financial Plan for review, including carryover items for multi-year projects or those that were not completed in 2013. Carryovers do not have an impact on taxation. Some projects included in the 2014 carryovers include the Ellis Street and Library Parkades, Cedar Creek Pump Station, Pandosy Village Transit Exchange and Kelowna International Airport’s Drive to 1.6 Million Passengers.

Lakeshore Road safety enhancements
Council approved the design, property acquisition and construction of Lakeshore Road between Dehart and McClure Roads. Construction will occur in 2014 and 2015 and will address traffic flow and safety concerns in the area and around Anne McClymont Elementary School.

Tourist destination signage
Council received information about tourist-oriented destination signs and approved the related policy. Tourism Oriented Destination Signs (TODS) work to direct tourists from the highway, to local tourist destinations/attractions. The new policy will help visitors and residents get to major attractions, reduce roadside sign clutter, decrease driver confusion and create a safer road network by ensuring signage does not compete with other important traffic control devices.
