Hedge fire threatens West Kelowna mobile home

WEST KELOWNA – A homeowner with a garden hose was able to save a mobile home from fire in West Kelowna this afternoon.

Platoon captain Jason Brolund says West Kelowna Fire Rescue was called to a home on Auburn Drive with a report of flames and smoke coming from a row of hedges.

“The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental, relating to cooking outside of the residence,” he says in a media release. “All occupants made it out of the structure safely and the homeowner was able to suppress some of the fire with a garden hose prior to our arrival. Crews extinguished and overhauled the area to ensure the fire was out.”

No one was injured but Brolund says with hot weather comes an increased risk of fire.

“Fires will start easier and spread faster. Some advance preparation around your home following the FireSmart Guidelines can offer additional protection, keep fires away or keep them small. Efforts you take today can make it easier for firefighters to protect your home during a fire.”
