Hamilton Fringe Festival posters with feminist and LGBT themes defaced

Original Publication Date July 23, 2017 - 1:24 PM

HAMILTON - Posters advertising Hamilton Fringe Festival shows with LGBTQ and feminist themes have been defaced with Bible verses condemning homosexuality and female independence.

On Saturday afternoon, festival organizers posted a photo on Twitter of posters for the show "S.C.U.M.: A Manifesto," a satire about Valerie Solanas, the radical feminist who shot Andy Warhol.

In the photo, the faces on the poster are obscured by stickers containing lines from the Book of Romans about women's inferiority to men.

The festival's Twitter post asked for help in identifying the vandal.

Posters for "Les Mouches Fantastiques," a show about a gay magazine published in Montreal between 1918 and 1920, were also covered with stickers, these ones condemning sexual relationships between men.

Hamilton city councillor Matthew Green posted a video to Twitter on Sunday morning denouncing the defacement and expressing support for the artists and audience members affected.

Green urged the vandal to "stop that nonsense, please."

Note to readers: This is a corrected story. A previous version had the incorrect name of the show and the wrong dates of when Les Mouches Fantastiques magazine was published. The story also erroneously said the magazine was illegal.
