Grant to support outdoor fitness equipment at Skaha Lake Park

Outdoor activity enthusiasts will have more options along the Penticton waterfront this fall, as the City of Penticton has secured grant funding for outdoor fitness stations.

Outdoor fitness equipment will be installed in Skaha Lake Park, and this project is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, which is providing a $25,000 grant. The park amenity was considered among the 2013 projects for waterfront enhancement, one of two Council strategic priorities, and is scheduled for installation this fall.

“The City of Penticton is realizing its strategy to make waterfront enhancement a reality, and these new park features at Skaha Lake will increase community vibrancy and activity,” said Acting Mayor Garry Litke. “While the equipment is targeted for older adults, everyone will be welcome to use the fitness stations.”

Great Outdoor Gym, a Canadian distributor for TriActive America outdoor fitness equipment, has been selected to provide the equipment for the project. All equipment pieces are eco-friendly and powered by users. A combination of pieces that improve strength, co-ordination and flexibility are being considered, such as a sit-up and stretching bench, seated push press and lat pull, leg press and tai chi spinners. Select cardiovascular equipment will also be considered: for example, an air walker, elliptical cross-trainer, stepper or stationary bike. A walking circuit along the Skaha Lake Park perimeter is also being considered.

“The City is always looking at creative ways to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles in our community. We are thrilled to implement this project that provides fitness opportunities at no cost and allows the user to workout in one of Penticton’s premiere parks,” said Chuck Loewen, General Manager of Recreation and Facilities.

The community is invited to offer insight on what they would like to see for the outdoor fitness stations. A meeting will be held on Friday, July 5 at 10 a.m. at the Penticton Seniors Drop-In Centre (2965 South Main St.) for residents to learn more about the project, provide input on the equipment options and comment on the two proposed installation locations in Skaha Park.

Those who cannot attend the session are welcome to provide feedback by calling 250-490-2426 by July 5.
