Get ready to see superheroes walking around downtown Kelowna

KELOWNA - If you’re spending time in downtown Kelowna this weekend, you might be wondering why so many superheroes are walking the streets.

The Kelowna Fan Xpo is taking place March 24 and March 25, presented by New Vintage Theatre.

Based on the International Comic-Con, held in San Diego, the event showcases comic books and science fiction/fantasy related television and films. It also give attendees the opportunity to partake in cosplay - or costume play.

According to their Facebook page, over 1,500 people have confirmed they are attending the event.

Actors on the lineup for the event include Kirby Morrow who is known for voicing the character Goku on Dragonball Z, Lee Tockar who played Dr. Frogg in League of Super Evil and Snips in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Jedidiah Goodacre who was in Tomorrowland: A World Beyond and Descendants.

Emmy Award winning artist John Delaney will also be at the event. A few of the projects Delaney has worked on include The Simpsons, Futurama, and Scooby-Doo.

A highlight of the event is a screening of the new science fiction film The Recall starring Wesley Snipes. The movie was shot in forests around Vernon last summer. The film is directed by Mauro Borrelli, who is known for his work on Pirate’s of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, as well as Captain America: The First Avenger. The film will be shown at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Kelowna Community Theatre as well as a 7:30 p.m. screening at The Mary Irwin Theatre.

If you love to game, there will be a video gaming competition in which participants will be going head to head playing Super Smash Bros. The competition will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Rotary Centre for the Arts.

For those who wish Halloween was everyday, they can take part in the largest cosplay contest in the Okanagan, however pre-registration is required.

The main event will be taking place at the Kelowna Community Theatre, but associated events will be held at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, Black Box Theatre and the Downtown Okanagan Regional Library.

Tickets will be be available at 11a.m., March 25, at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, The Black Box Theatre and the Kelowna Community Theatre. VIP tickets are $100, $35 for adults and $15 for kids aged six and over.
