Gear up for 2014 Bike to School and Work Week

VERNON - The City of Vernon and the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) are encouraging North Okanagan residents to ride their bikes in support of the 2014 Bike to School and Work Week from May 25 to June 1. To promote the event, the City is inviting new and returning team leaders to a free information workshop on Wednesday, April 30, from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m. at Vernon City Hall Council Chambers. Team leaders will be provided with a number of resources, including support to register their teams on the new provincial Bike-to-Work website. The updated site includes new features that allow cyclists to plan routes online, calculate their total distance and calories burned, as well as the reduction in greenhouse gases (GHGs) from riding rather than driving to work. Along with a t-shirt and promotional package, team leaders will also be provided dinner by event sponsors, Domino’s Pizza.

In 2013, more than 35 communities around B.C. participated in this event. In the North Okanagan, 56 teams comprised of 401 riders rode a total of 12,894 kilometres, which equaled 2,991 kilograms of CO2 offsets.

To preregister for this workshop or for more information on Bike to School and Work Week, please call 250-550-3634 or visit www.vernon.ca/vernonmoves.
