KAMLOOPS - Firefighters are wrapping up after a garage fire broke out at 920 Holt Street at about 1:15 p.m. today.
Assistant fire chief Curtis Bossrt says four fire trucks and one initial response truck responded to a call for a fully involved vehicle and garage fire but when they arrived it had spread into the house as well.
The only person home at the time was trying to remove some stuff from the garage while the fire was burning and suffered smoke inhalation. He was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Bossert notes the fire in the garage took a little longer to put out than usual.
"The fire in the garage was a little stubborn, possibly fuel fed from a gasoline tank in one of the vehicles," he says. "We got it knocked down now."
Crews had to take to the roof to cut out ventilation holes to allow the smoke to escape the attic space and the entire house has suffered smoke and water damage.
"Nobody's going to be living there for awhile," Bossert says. "It's going to need some repairs."
A fire investigator will be on scene and will speak to the resident to determine the cause.
