KAMLOOPS - Former Kamloops city councillor Marg Spina has been recognized for her work with the Southern Interior Local Government Association during the annual conference in Vancouver.

She served as president of the Association in 2016 and has been granted a lifetime membership to the group made up of 37 communities in the Southern Interior.

Interim Kamloops mayor Arjun Singh was on hand to accept the honour for Spina who resigned from her council position due to an ongoing battle with breast cancer.

He says she made the organization work better.

"Marg is very fondly remembered," he says.

Singh says it was heart warming to hear all the support for Spina at the conference.

"People are constantly asking after her, hoping she is doing the best she can do. Everybody's behind her," he says. "They know her from... all over the province because she served for a couple of years on the Union of B.C. Municipalities board as well."

"She's known as a very innovative and very tenacious kind of person."

Spina went on leave from her council position in December of 2016 before officially resigning from her post in June this year. She was first elected to council in 2010.

Her resignation was part of the reason for the byelection on Saturday, Sept. 30.
