Fireworks starts fire that threatens home

KELOWNA - FIre crews suspect fireworks were the cause of a large hedge fire that threatened a nearby home on Beach Ave early this morning.

Kelowna Fire Department was called out just after 3 a.m. and found roughly 40 cedar hedges on fire. Platoon Captain Steve Roshinsky says people in the home were evacuated while firefighters managed to get ahold of the fire and put it out.

"Flames came within 10 feet of the residence, no damage to the house or exposures," Roshinsky says. "Please be aware fireworks are illegal in the City of Kelowna without special permit."

Police are also investigating.
