TORONTO - The head of the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television is stepping down.

Helga Stephenson says she is looking forward to more world travel and other challenges.

An executive search is underway for her replacement. The academy says Stephenson will remain chief executive officer until the position is filled.

Under her five-year watch, Stephenson spearheaded the merger of the academy's film, television and digital media awards into the Canadian Screen Awards.

The union of the film-focused Genie Awards and the TV-geared Geminis was a bid to boost each industry by better highlighting Canadian talent.

Before that, Stephenson served as director of the Toronto International Film Festival in the late 1980s and early '90s.
