TORONTO - Emmy-nominee Elisabeth Moss says keeping up with her own busy schedule prevents her from getting sucked into the dark world of "The Handmaid's Tale."

The actress, who's at the Toronto International Film Festival this week with the Swedish film "The Square," says she isn't preoccupied with preparations for the second season of the series, based on Margaret Atwood's totalitarian novel.

"I love the work and I take the work seriously but I don't take myself seriously," Moss says with a big smile while sipping a smoothie.

"I'm just not one of those people who has time to get into my own head and make a big deal out of it. (I don't) need to go into a dark corner and think about my dead dog so I can cry."

Moss is embarking on what could be a huge week for her career. She's headed back to Los Angeles to find out if she's a winner at Sunday's Emmy Awards.

Then she returns to Toronto next week for production on the new "Handmaid's Tale" season, which shoots until February.

Moss says the challenge of filming two episodes at once and working 75-hour weeks on set can be draining, so she tries to isolate herself rather than mingle with the cast and crew.

"It can be distracting to have a lot of conversation with the hundred people that are on set about your weekend or how your Thanksgiving was," she says.

"I'd love to go to a ... cabin and just find my dark side," she says, using an expletive to punctuate her point.

"That's the dream."
