Unseen dockyards drama by Arthur Miller to have stage premiere in Britain

LONDON - A previously unstaged Arthur Miller drama set in the brutal world of the Brooklyn docks will have its world premiere at a British theatre next year, the centenary of the playwright's birth.

The Royal and Derngate theatre in Northampton, central England, announced Monday that "The Hook" will be staged in June, followed by a run at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool in July.

The play is adapted by Emmy Award-winner Ron Hutchinson from Miller's screenplay about a longshoreman who takes on both bosses and crime gangs.

Written at the height of 1950s anticommunism, it remained unproduced amid fears it could foment unrest.

"Death of a Salesman" author Miller went on to set his play "A View From the Bridge" on the New York docks. He died in 2005.
