Elementary students put mind over muscle

March 18, 2014 - 2:32 PM

UBC SCIENTISTS OFFER YOUNG STUDENTS AN UP-CLOSE LOOK AT COOL NEUROSCIENCE

Neuromuscular physiology is a fancy term used to describe the connection between your muscles and your brain, enabling you to run, jump and be awesome. And it’s a science topic Okanagan elementary school students will know a lot more about when they attend this Thursday’s special UBC program, Mind over Muscle: Why is neuroscience cool?

From 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., students from Grades 4 to 6 will be hosted by UBC Okanagan’s School of Health and Exercise Sciences where they’ll learn how the brain and nerves enable bodies to move in complex ways.

Students will experience first-hand experiments such as grip-squeezing objects to explore the science behind how your body adjusts to strength demands. They’ll also test reaction times, and balance while learning how movement can be a gold medal performance, even when the body is tired. We are capable of more than we think – come see how.

To find out more or to participate in Thursday’s cool science experience, contact Assoc. Prof. Jennifer Jakobi at Jennifer.jakobi@ubc.ca.
