DWK council highlights for June 25

Cultural Development Plan
Council provided key decisions on the developing Cultural Development Plan which will be incorporated into a draft Plan to be brought to Council for consideration of adoption this summer. The plan provides future direction, defines the municipal role and makes recommendations for actions that will shape and guide a realistic investment into cultural priorities for the next 10 years.

Asquith Road Development
Council adopted the Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw amendments for 3030 Asquith Road to accommodate a future single family subdivision as part of the Smith Creek Hills Development. The development will accommodate approximately 15 single family homes located on the eastern side of the Smith Creek neighbourhood and accessed via Asquith Road.

Mission Hill Special Event Area
Council agreed to recommend support for a proposed Winery Special Event Area for Mission Hill Winery to the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch. The proposal, if approved, would allow the winery to host events such as wedding receptions, parties, concerts and festivals on the winery property. Council provided its support subject to limiting the hours of operation from 9 a.m. to midnight.

Road Maintenance Update
Staff provided Council with an update on road maintenance activities in the District, six months after the municipality took over responsibility from the Province of BC for road maintenance in the community. Council was advised that despite some issues with respect to winter maintenance activities, the District is satisfied with the activities of its roads maintenance contractor, AEL, a division of HMC Services Inc. The District also recently completed its first ever post winter street sweeping.

Statement of Financial Information
Council approved the 2012 Statement of Financial Information (SOFI) report for the District of West Kelowna. The report is an annual requirement for all local governments under the Financial Information Act. It provides full disclosure of Mayor and Council remuneration in 2012, reimbursements and expenses received by Mayor and Council, staff who have earnings and expenses over $75,000 in 2012 and reimbursements and expenses received by DWK staff. The report also lists all vendors paid $25,000 or more.
