VERNON - The City of Vernon is warning drivers to keep a careful eye on the speedometer in school zones because the Speed Watch Program begins April 2.

The program is supported by ICBC's Road Sense initiative and directly coordinated by Vernon Safe Communities Unit. The RCMP Citizens Patrol volunteers throughout the Vernon  will operate the program.

The purpose of the Speed Watch program is to enhance road safety and educate drivers. They'll be watching for speeding and distracted driving. Drivers will see their speed posted on digital speed reader boards as trained volunteers aim radar units at traffic. They'll concentrate their efforts on areas where speeding is a problem and in school zones until students leave for summer break.

Occasionally Speed Watch operatives will be RCMP members. These two-strike operations could result in tickets if laws are ignored.
