Deals at trunk sale this weekend

Expect a bargain hunter’s paradise at the annual spring Trunk Sale at Okanagan College this weekend. Organized by the Regional Waste Reduction Office, the Trunk Sale event promotes reuse and recycling in the parking lot of Okanagan College Saturday from 8am until noon.

Rae Stewart with the Waste Reduction Office says with over 150 vendors signed up to sell their goods right from the back of their vehicles, or trunks, it a big day for deals and reuse.  “It’s one humungous garage sale, one convenient location, with entertainment, great food, and tons of bargains. It’s just a great way to spend a Saturday morning.”

Stewart adds another Trunk Sale is also planned for the fall, Saturday September 27th.”These Trunk Sales have really caught on over the years, every year there’s a wait list for those vying to get in on the limited number of spots available.  If you want to take part as a seller, it’s a good idea to register early. “Stewart adds, “We initially designed these events for those in condos or apartments, people who don’t traditionally have the opportunity to host their own garage sales, but naturally we don’t limit it, anyone can take part.”

Stewart adds the premise beyond reuse and recycling is to keep any unnecessary material out of our one remaining landfill. “After the Sale is over we always have a number of charities on site so that those participating don’t have to lug their items home again if they don’t wish to, they can simply donate them. This year, Big Brothers Big Sisters will be on hand to accept donations, as will Planet Earth Recycling, the Canadian Diabetes Association, and Bibles for Mission. The Okanagan Mission Lions Club is also instrumental in the success of these events, as each year members volunteer their time to sell pancake breakfasts by donation, and help with traffic control.”

The Trunk Sale runs this Saturday from 8am until noon at Okanagan College, 1000 KLO Road. It’s free to attend, rain or shine, access off of Raymer Avenue only.   The Trunk Sale will be held in parking lot 17 next to the student residence buildings.
