Day of remembrance planned for Kamloops transgender community

KAMLOOPS - The annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, aimed to bring violence towards gender diverse people into focus, will have a Kamloops event this year.

Organizer Corey Keith, who goes by the genderless pronoun per which is short for person, says the event on Nov. 19 will give members of the transgender community, friends and allies a chance to remember and discuss the issues they still face.

“We’ll remember the violence and murder to trans people, people who don’t fit into the male and female boxes,” Keith says. “There’s a moment people can come and share their connection to the trans community.”

While open violence against trans people in Kamloops is rare, there are still a broad set of issues facing them including access to jobs and healthcare. For people from Kamloops it can be more difficult to come out, as they have to face the community they grew up around.

“We’re talking about issues like finding employment and good employment,” Keith says. “There’s low income that can be a barrier for services as well.”

Keith says support from the pride community and allies is growing.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance event is happening on Nov. 19 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Smorgasboard Deli at 225 7 Ave. Some candles will be on hand, but it is suggested participants bring their own.
