Jones beats Homan 7-5, wins inaugural women's Champions Cup curling title

SHERWOOD PARK, Alta. - Reid Carruthers needed two extra ends Sunday to make it a Winnipeg sweep at the inaugural Champions Cup curling event.

The Winnipeg skip scored a single in the 10th end to edge Toronto's John Epping 4-3 in the men's championship draw at the seventh and final event of the Grand Slam season.

"Obviously, winning this event is an unreal feeling," said Carruthers.

"It's the last spiel of the year, so we're peaking a little late but at the same time it's never a bad thing to go out at the end of the season with a nice, big win."

Team Carruthers receives $24,500 of the $100,000 men's purse.

Carruthers went up 1-0 in the fourth end, but Epping responded with a deuce in fifth to take the lead.

Carruthers scored two of his own in the seventh, but a single from Epping in the eighth pushed the draw to extra ends.

Earlier in the day, Jennifer Jones lead from the opening end, beating Rachel Homan 7-5 in the women's final.

Jones opened with the hammer and staked her Winnipeg team to a 2-0 lead after the first end.

Ottawa's Homan responded with a point in the third end, and the two skips alternated deuces with the hammer in the fourth and fifth.

Jones broke the game open in the sixth, scoring three to take a 7-3 lead.

Homan responded with two in the seventh, but Jones had the hammer in the eighth and ran Homan out of rocks for the win.

"It's a great event," said Jones. "We love that they're adding new events for the players and to be the first ones to win is something special."

Team Jones takes home $24,500 of the $100,000 women's prize purse.
