SASKATOON - Investigators say a man charged with killing a woman who vanished five years ago walked into a police station and told them where to find her body.
Police revealed Monday that Jerry Franklin Constant also provided a story as to what happened to Karina Beth Ann Wolfe.
Human remains were uncovered two weeks ago in a marshy area northwest of Saskatoon and DNA tests linked them to the 20-year-old missing woman.
Constant, 33, appeared in court via video to face charges of second-degree murder and offering an indignity to a body. A judge ordered a psychiatric exam and put the case over for one week.
Police said they don't believe Constant and Wolfe had a prior relationship. After she disappeared in July 2010, officers said they considered the case suspicious because she lived a high-risk lifestyle.
She was last seen getting into a grey Corvette in front of her mother's Saskatoon home in July 2010.
"The last memory I have is Karina saying, 'I love you, Mom, and I will be home later,'" Carol Wolfe told reporters Monday through a sign-language interpreter.
"Karina never got to come home."
On the weekend, the family visited the site were Wolfe's remains were found and held an aboriginal ceremony.
Wolfe said she is grateful that she now will be able to bury her child.
She described her only daughter as "a beautiful young woman, a talented artist, painter and journalist" who never got to achieve her dreams.
"Karina was taken from our family too early in her journey of life. Our family is suffering with a heavy heart."
Acting Staff Sgt. Tyson Lavalee said police continue to investigate and want to talk to people they believe may have more information about what happened.
