Coroner identifies deceased Alberta man in highway collision

A tarp covers a vehicle involved in a fatal collision on Hwy 1 this morning.

BC Coroners Services has confirmed the identity of an Alberta man who died in a highway crash Friday morning as 72-year-old Herbert Edwin Rachel of Wildwood, Alta.

Police believe Rachel had been following behind family in a vehicle when he allegedly crossed the intersection at Holman Road on the Trans Canada Highway and was hit by oncoming traffic. The Chevrolet Impala he was driving was hit by an oncoming Toyota Sienna headed east around 10 a.m. that morning.

The driver's side of the car was caved in, and iis beleived Rachel passed away instantly.

The B.C. Coroners Service as well as RCMP continue to investigate his death.

One dead following highway collision on Friday

A 72-year-old Alta. man is dead after a highway collision on Friday morning in Valleyview.

RCMP were called about 10 a.m. after a vehicle allegedly pulled out on the highway and was hit by oncoming traffic.

Witnesses told RCMP that a 2012 Chevrolet Impala was travelling north on Highway 1 at the intersection of Holman Road.

Police believed the driver of the Impala was following family, who had driven ahead of them through the intersection.

As the vehicle pulled out, a 2011 Toyota Sienna travelling east on the highway hit it on the driver's side.

RCMP are saying the driver died instantly and the lone occupant of the Sienna sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

No charges are being considered at this time, however police continue to investigate the fatal collision with help from the B.C. Coroner's Service.

Reports of fatal collision in Valleyview this morning

An Alberta man is reportedly dead and two others taken to hospital following a two-vehicle collision on the TransCanada Highway near Pineridge Golf Course this morning.

A white Cherolet Impala and a gray Toyota Sienna, both with B.C. plates, collided at the intersection of the highway and Holman Street around 10:30 a.m. 

Traffic was limited to one lane for several hours as emergency crews investigated the crash and worked to clean up the scene.

We are waiting for official confirmation on the fatality, number of injuries and cause of the collision.
