Collaborative efforts bring two high-profile events to Kal Tire Place

When Kal Tire Place’s multifunctional facilities were in demand for two high-profile events—the 2014 Okanagan Military Tattoo and the 2014 BC Junior B Lacrosse Provincials—on the same August long weekend, there were concerns that one of the events would have to be bumped to another weekend or moved to another location. However, City of Vernon’s recreation services staff worked closely with organizers from both events to come up with a solution that will allow Vernon area residents the chance to enjoy two diverse events that showcase the facility’s versatility.
“The City of Vernon Recreation Services is very pleased to see that these groups have worked with our staff in order to allow two great events to take place in August,” said Doug Ross, Director of Recreation Services. “We’re excited to have events like the inaugural Okanagan Military Tattoo and the Jr. B Lacrosse Provincials taking place in our community.”
Military Tattoo performances have a 300-year history and originated with returning militias putting on a show for the home folks. They have now evolved into military and non-military groups and individuals, and from just marching into a multi-layered, multi-ethnic music, marching, singing and dancing events. The Okanagan Military Tattoo will take place Friday, August 1 and Saturday, August 2.
Norm Crerar, director of the Okanagan Military Tattoo 2014, expressed his appreciation of all parties working to come to a mutually beneficial arrangement for the facilities.

“This show, with 400 performers and needing 200 volunteers, will be the biggest show of its kind to come to Vernon,” said Crerar. “We expect this event to be an annual event and just as important to Vernon as Funtastic and the Winter Carnival”.

The Vernon Tigers Lacrosse Team is hosting the BC Junior B Lacrosse Provincials, which will take place Saturday through Monday, August 2-4.

“The Vernon Tigers are very pleased that all parties were able to work together and make both events happen,” said Roxane Seaton, the general manager of the Tigers. “The last time the Tigers hosted the Jr. B Provincials was in 2004. To be able to play for your hometown crowd in your home arena is fantastic. We are looking forward to showcasing some exciting junior lacrosse and the talent of the young men on our team.”
