Man poised to become Newfoundland premier defends right to life beliefs

CORNER BROOK, N.L. - The man set to become Newfoundland and Labrador's next premier says he attends a right to life rally every year in Corner Brook because he believes in "the value of every human life."

In a statement, Frank Coleman says he won't deny his beliefs, but he does not intend to impose his personal views on others.

The issue arose today after the CBC reported that Coleman's wife, along with some of their children and grandchildren, were spotted at the annual event outside the Western Memorial Regional Hospital.

Coleman was unavailable for an interview.

But his spokeswoman, Carmel Turpin, says Coleman did not attend the event because he was out of town.

The 60-year-old businessman became the sole Progressive Conservative leadership contender Thursday after his only competitor dropped out of the race.
