Celebrate a revitalized downtown at the city's block party

June 13, 2014 - 4:30 PM

PENTICTON - The City is hosting a block party next week to celebrate the newly revitalized Westminster-Martin western gateway.

Revitalization of the 200 block of Martin Street between Westminster Avenue and Nanaimo Avenue was the first phase of the City’s Downtown revitalization plan. Construction began in late February and finished at the end of May, right on schedule.

“Completing the western gateway to Downtown Penticton is a significant milestone for the revitalization project,” said Mayor Garry Litke. “Downtown revitalization is designed to inject new energy and investment into the community’s commercial core. The Westminster-Martin project has become a stimulus for additional economic activity in the area, and it’s exciting to see the vision of Council’s strategic priority come to life.”

The party will be an extension of the Saturday Market, and open for pedestrian access. Businesses along the stretch will offer deals including discounted hair cuts at Pharoah’s Men’s Hair Salon and a free 9 a.m. spin class at City Centre Fitness.

“We are so excited to see the relaunch of the Westminster-Martin project and to see the business owners enjoying their new ‘storefront’ areas, all the extra activity on the street adds to the colour and vibrancy of our Downtown,” said Kerri Milton, Executive Director of the Downtown Penticton Association.

The City continues to plan the next phases of the revitalization project, staff encourage residents to provide input and ideas of what they want to see. City staff will be set up at the downtown market this Saturday, June 14 and June 21 to discuss options with anyone who drops by.
