SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Puerto Rico's police department has agreed to pay $8.7 million worth of back wages and interest to more than 2,600 police officers following a federal investigation.
The U.S. Department of Labor said Wednesday that the department committed several violations including failure to properly pay overtime from June 2010 to August 2014.
Previous similar federal investigations have resulted in more than $6.2 million worth of back wages for more than 1,000 Puerto Rico police department employees.
The department also is undergoing a 10-year federally mandated reform after U.S. prosecutors released a report in 2011 that accused local officers of illegal killings, corruption and civil rights violations.
