Plane from Haiti carrying 3 crashes off Dominican Republic

Original Publication Date October 18, 2016 - 8:25 AM

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - A small plane that had taken off from Haiti with three people on board has crashed off the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Authorities had preliminarily identified the three people on board as a couple from Tennessee who had been living in the Dominican Republic and a visiting man from Canada but were still working to confirm their names, the director of the Aviation Accident Investigation Commission, Enmanuel Souffront, said Tuesday.

A statement from the civil aviation authority says the plane took off from Port-au-Prince on Monday and was headed to the Dominican coastal town of Puerto Plata. The Dominican Air Force had located wreckage from the plane.

The single-engine Lake LA-250 apparently lost contact with the control tower shortly after 6 p.m. when it was about 4 miles (6 kilometres) from Puerto Plata. The cause of the accident is unknown.

This story has been corrected to say that the couple were both U.S. citizens and the third person was from Canada.
