THOMPSON-OKANAGAN - The sticks aren't quite taped and the skates still need to be sharpened, but the Western Hockey League has released the 2016-17 regular season schedule with a home-and-home tilt between the Kamloops Blazers and the Kelowna Rockets to kick off the season.

The Blazers have the home ice advantage for their Friday, Sept. 23 opener, then travel to Kelowna on Saturday, Sept. 24, where the Rockets will host their home opener.

In total nine teams will host seasoner openers on Sept. 23. This season more than 70 per cent of the nearly 800 scheduled WHL regular season games will be played on weekends, holidays and over Christmas break. The regular season ends March 19, 2017.
