KELOWNA– Five Kelowna organizations have been awarded grants worth more than $174,000 from the B.C. Arts Council.

Organizations receiving grants:
Kelowna Museums Society - $65,000 for operating activities
Kelowna Art Gallery Association - $55,000 for operating activities
Okanagan Artists’ Alternative Association - $25,000 for operating activities
Arts Council of the Central Okanagan - $20,388 for operating activities
Bumbershoot Children’s Theatre Society - $9,000 for artist/designer costs for Mainstage Series

“These grants help give local artists a venue to showcase their best, and more opportunities for us to be inspired by them,” says Premier Christy Clark, MLA for Westside-Kelowna. “The Central Okanagan has a thriving arts scene because of the dedication shown by groups like the Kelowna Art Gallery Association.”

“It’s important that we engage our youth in the arts, and encourage their talents in this arena,” says Kelowna-Mission MLA Steve Thomson. “Groups like the Bumbershoot Children’s Theatre Society provide memorable performances and experiences for kids and their families.”

“The arts inspire us, entertain us, and move us—a true outlet of human expression,” says Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick. “Our vibrant arts scene will continue to showcase powerful and meaningful works to audiences of all ages, thanks to these five grants.”

The funding comes from a record-high $24 million that the BC Arts Council has received from the Government of British Columbia to support artists, arts activities and culture in 2014-15.

As B.C.’s lead agency for arts funding and development, council enlists the expertise of British Columbia’s artists to evaluate grant applications through a peer review process independent of government.
