Arts scholarship available to Kamloops area youth

April 30, 2015 - 11:35 AM

KAMLOOPS - The Kamloops Arts Council invites Grade 12 students going on to post-secondary studies in the arts to apply for its annual scholarship. The application deadline is May 31, 2015.

The KAC's Julia Appley-Mitra Youth Scholarship is intended to support local emerging artists. Ms. Mitra was, and continues to be, a strong advocate for the inclusion of all artists in the growth of the arts community in Kamloops.

Up to two scholarships of $500 each may be awarded annually to individuals graduating from Grade 12 who are going on to pursue post-secondary studies in art & graphics, music, drama or dance.

The application may be downloaded at
One of last year's scholarship recipients was Marta Oran, who is pursuing studies in theatre arts.

"To be honest, I didn't know if I was going to go to university straight out of high school due to money issues," says Marta, who recently completed her first year of studies at TRU. "But receiving the scholarship from the Kamloops Arts Council encouraged me... and this summer, I will be completing an acting program in New York City."

The Kamloops Arts Council is a registered charitable organization devoted to the development and enhancement of all art forms in the Kamloops area. The KAC provides local artists and arts groups - visual artists, musicians, dancers, actors, writers and more - with opportunities for exposure, networking and professional development.

As part of its mandate, the KAC takes the arts out to the community - producing high-quality, year-round low- and no-cost arts programs, performances, workshops and events such as Art in the Park on Canada Day, the Rivertown Players Summer Theatre Program, the Kamloops Children's Arts Festival, and much more.
