Look up, look way up, at the new additions on Bernard Avenue’s light poles. Artistic metal fabricated plates created by local artist Crystal Przybille have been installed between Abbott and Pandosy Streets.
“This is really the crowning touch to the light poles,” said Pat McCormick, Public Art Coordinator. “A notable feature is that the stainless steel plates are back-lit so that the art illuminates at night.”
A total of 46 plates will be mounted on 23 light poles to reflect the three place-making themes also found in the other streetscape details along Bernard Avenue.
At the west end of the street, where the plate installation is complete, there is an aquatic theme. At the east end of Bernard, where plates will be installed later this week, the hillsides and grasslands of the valley will be showcased. And in between, where the plates are scheduled to be installed upon completion of the final construction phase, the theme highlights the cultural history of our community.
Submissions from six local artists were evaluated by members of the City’s Public Art Roster. A representative of the Downtown Kelowna Association also sat on the evaluation panel. Przybille also designed the tree grates found on Cawston Avenue and, more recently, the Father Pandosy sculpture. The light pole plates, as with Przybille’s other works, will be included with the City’s Public Art Collection.
