Arrest made in fatal Hedley accident

RCMP arrested a Hedley man with a connection to a fatal motor vehicle accident that happened near Hedley.

By Shannon Quesnel

A Hedley man was arrested on Friday in connection to a fatal vehicle accident that occured on March 30.

RCMP officers apprehended the 24-year-old man near Keremeos. The arrest followed a motor-vehicle accident on Highway 3, east of Hedley on March 30. Driver Steve Lee Roy of no fixed address was killed.

RCMP Traffic Services are reconstructing the crash to determine cause and the seating position of the vehicle occupants. What is known so far is at 4:45 am a 1993 Ford Escort was westbound on Highway 3 just east of Hedley.

Upon entering a clockwise turn, the Escort crossed the centerline into the oncoming lane. The driver overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle slid into a field on the highway's south side. The Escort then rolled into a hydro pole. Roy was found deceased at the scene. The passenger, a 17-year-old Hedley girl sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries. She was sent to Penticton Regional Hospital by ambulance.

Alcohol and possibly speed are believed to be contributing factors.
