ARMSTRONG - The Armstrong and Spallumchen fire chief is moving from volunteer to full-time.

Ian Cummings will be the full-time Armstrong Spallumcheen Fire Service fire chief, according to a media release issued today, Nov. 23. The paid position replaces a previous volunteer position Cummings also held.

It’s the first time the joint volunteer fire department will employee a full-time fire chief.

A 2013 review of the fire service identified the demands on the paid on-call volunteer fire chief as a growing issue over the past decade and the commission decided to hire a full-time employee.

“I am very pleased to see the hiring of Chief Cummings,” Armstrong mayor and commission chair Chris Pieper says in the release. “A long-time member of the department, chief Cummings is prepared to create a long term strategy and meet the increasing demands."
