Kamloops kid helps unusual lost pet get safely back home
A thirteen–year-old Kamloops student was approached by an unusually friendly bird while he was sitting with friends outside on the portables at school earlier this week.
Kristofer Moody said the little bird came flying out of a field in the morning of June 26 and soon got up to some comical antics.
“It landed right beside us on the wood railing and stayed there and let us pet it,” he said. “We were shocked at first. It was really cool. I put it on my arm and it walked around.”
When break ended and the students returned to class, the bird went with them.
“It flew into the classroom and onto my teacher’s back and flew out again,” Kristofer said. “Later it was in a tree and kids were throwing balls trying to hit it. The teacher was trying to get the kids to leave it alone.”
He said the bird flew from tree to tree before it landed on his head and gave a little peck. He picked up the bird, carried him to his mom’s car and went home for lunch.
“It was hot so we put him on an ice-pack with a tea towel on it, then he pooped on the dashboard,” he said. “We brought him home and gave him a bowl of water. He stood in it washing his feet and drinking. We gave him a bigger bowl and it was playing in the water, having a bath.”
Kristofer put a bowl of water and apple chunks outside for the bird and walked back to school while it stuck around his house with his mom, Katie Moody.
“He flew onto our chandelier, then he landed on my mom’s head,” he said. “He flew away for a short time but came back and my mom sent me a photo of it standing on her finger.”

Kristofer didn’t know what kind of bird it was, only that it was “really pretty” and “very friendly.” He guessed it could be a baby crow, or a starling.
Katie put a photo of the bird on Facebook and the mystery of the friendly bird was solved. It turned out to be someone’s pet sparrow and the owners arrived that same day to pick it up.
“Mom said the lady was really grateful, her daughter’s bird had flown out of the house and she was really upset. It made me feel really good to help get the bird get back to its home.”

Katie described her son as an animal lover who is “very sweet.”
