The Osoyoos Indian Band has partnered with the provincial government to build affordable on-reserve rental housing.

BC Housing is working with the band to build a five-storey building at 4391 Cedar Lane with an emphasis on affordable rentals for a range of people, according to a BC Housing Ministry media release issued today, Jan. 26.

The building, which is now under construction, will have 43 units with a mix of studios, one, two and three-bedroom apartments to accommodate families, individuals, seniors and people with disabilities.

The project has an emphasis on supporting Indigenous people, including Osoyoos Indian Band members, the ministry said.

“The Osoyoos Indian Band in partnership with the B.C. government is proud to announce this housing project, which will help with the ongoing housing crises in the South Okanagan,” Osoyoos Indian Band Chief Clarence Louie said in the release.

Construction is scheduled to be finished in the summer of 2025. When completed some of the units will be market rentals, some will be geared to income and there will be some deep subsidy units.

The band is going to own and operate the building through its Wolf Creek Housing Society.

Funding for the almost $8 million project is coming through three sources; $5.3 million from the Building BC Community Housing Fund, $1.8 million through the Canada-British Columbia Bilateral Agreement and $784,000 in land equity from the Osoyoos Indian Band.
