B.C. Hydro and FortisB.C. both announced they will be offsetting the cost of customers’ electricity bills this winter.

All residential customers will notice a $100 credit on an upcoming electricity bill, according to a news release from Fortis. The exact timing depends on each customer’s billing schedule.

Customers with more than one account are only eligible for one credit.

Non-Fortis customers in Penticton, Summerland, Nelson and Grand Forks will also receive a credit, the release says.

Commercial customers can expect a credit during the first half of 2023. The exact amount is expected to be an average of $500, and will be determined by the amount of electricity consumed between Oct. 1, 2021 and Sept. 30, 2022.

All accounts that have been active since Oct. 1 are eligible. The credit will be applied automatically and there is no need to apply.

B.C. Hydro also announced cost-of-living credits for residential and commercial customers today, Nov. 18.

The credit comes thanks to new Premier David Eby.

“People and small businesses across B.C. are feeling the squeeze of global inflation,” Eby said in a news release.

“It’s a time when people need their government to continue to be there for them. That’s why we’re focused on helping people most impacted by the rising costs we’re seeing around the world – giving people a bit of extra credit, especially at a time of year when expenses can be quick to add up.”
